How to Choose an Affiliate Marketing Merchant

Nov 4th, 2010

Affiliate marketing is one of the many ways to make money online. Simply, this is a relationship between you and a web-based company, or the affiliate marketing merchant. The merchant pays a certain amount of money or commission for each site visitor that performs an action. Much of affiliate marketing is based on direct sales (pay per sale) but there are also payouts for each visitor brought in (pay per click) and for each visitor that registers with the merchant (pay per lead).

When choosing a merchant for affiliate marketing, you will obviously want to consider the type and amount of payout that you get. There are many merchants which give attractive percentages. In the case of pay per leads, you may even get a percentage for each time the visitor re-registers. This means regular payouts without really having to “do” anything.

Be careful when choosing an affiliate marketing merchant just on payout amounts though. Many merchants require you to reach a certain amount before they will even make payouts. If this amount is very high, you may never reach that figure and you will not be entitled to the fruits of your affiliate marketing labor. Also consider the method of payout and what percentage it will cost before you actually see any cash.

One aspect that often gets overlooked while choosing an affiliate marketing merchant is the actual product or service that you are marketing. Instead of choosing the merchant with the highest payouts, consider how comfortable you are about the product/service. For example, porn sites have great payouts but not everyone wants to spend their days writing about smut. If you are passionate and knowledgeable about what the merchant has, then you’re more likely to succeed in affiliate marketing.
